Eyesight & Colour Vision in Seafarer Medical

Watch this video before your medical to avoid rejection.

One of the most stressful parts of maritime medical is the eye test. Many candidates fear rejection because of spectacle number or LASIK history. In reality, maritime vision assessment is based on operational safety — not just power.

Spectacle number alone rarely decides fitness.
Functional vision ability decides fitness.

What actually matters

LASIK surgery

Laser vision correction is often acceptable after stability. Doctors mainly assess recovery stability and visual quality rather than surgery history itself.

Colour vision

Deck duties require stricter colour identification than engine roles. Some candidates are restricted from navigation roles but may still work in other departments.

Common mistake

Candidates attempt medical repeatedly without understanding why they failed. Understanding interpretation criteria helps avoid repeated expense and travel.
